Authentic versus Cheap Wines

When I describe Vinbiz wines as “authentic”, I’m often asked whether cheap, supermarket wines are, therefore, artificial or a con.  The answer is no, but there is a world of difference between wines created and drunk for their taste and those intended to be sold in volume at the cheapest price possible.

Wines for taste are full-flavoured and they fully express the distinct characteristics of the land, climate and traditions from which they originated.

Wines for price cannot express the same complexity. Costs must be kept to a minimum which does not allow for the producers to respond to the specific qualities of the harvest or apply labour intensive techniques that result in distinct regional characteristics.

Furthermore, in order to sell the large quantities required to keep the prices low, bulk wines must appeal to the largest possible audience. Strong characteristics and big flavours are not feasible because they do not appeal to all tastes.

However, there is no attempt to deceive the customer. Cheap wines are sold on price and for many, the lack of flavour is a small price to pay for a small price!

Save our wines! Don’t let the supermarkets catering for the cut-price idiots spoil the UK wine industry for good! Vote with your wallets and buy from vinbiz!
